“God, Country, Notre Dame.”

It is the phrase inscribed above the east door of the University’s Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and it reflects our longstanding commitment to and support of the military, veterans, and their families. This commitment can be seen throughout our 179-year history, from past Notre Dame presidents serving in the chaplain corps to the students enrolled today in the ROTC program—which, after the military academies, is among the national leaders in graduating military officers.

What’s more, we believe that as the world’s preeminent Catholic university, Notre Dame is uniquely positioned to serve those who are serving or have served in defense of our country.

That is a responsibility we are privileged to accept.
