During our 2024 experiential education trip, students, faculty, and staff retraced the history of Allied forces during World War II. Led by the dedicated team from Essential History Expeditions, including Brian DeToy and Sheryl Shafer, participants were expertly guided as they explored significant sites associated with the Battle of Britain, Operation Overlord, and Operation Dynamo. This immersive experience provided valuable lessons in grand strategy, military tactics, and insights into ethical leadership and moral decision-making.
Key Highlights of the 2024 Trip
One of the most impactful moments of the trip occurred on the beaches of Normandy, just a month after the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Standing on the very grounds where heroism was tested against insurmountable odds, participants connected deeply with the personal stories of those who bravely served. Our visit to the American Cemetery, perched on the bluffs overlooking Omaha Beach, served as a poignant reminder of the selfless sacrifices made by the Citizen Soldiers of our nation's Greatest Generation.
Throughout this transformative trip, participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions about the motivations behind military strategy and the importance of ethical leadership. The powerful narratives experienced during site visits enriched our students' understanding of the significance of historical events and the lasting impact of decisions made by leaders during times of conflict.
