A native of Houston, Texas and as a first-generation American born to Vietnamese parents who immigrated to the United States at the end of the Vietnam War, there was always a strong calling for Hy Pham to serve in the military as a way to give back to a country that has given his family so much. Hy ultimately got his opportunity to carry out his calling by commissioning into the United States Navy through the Naval ROTC program at the University of Notre Dame in 2009, and a second life calling arose thereafter after attaining his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has since then been able to fulfill both career interests as a Navy physician, having completed his residency in Family Medicine at Naval Hospital Bremerton in 2016 and fulfilling subsequent military assignments with Fleet Surgical Team Three (FST-3), Naval Branch Health Clinic Key West, and Naval Branch Health Clinic Mayport.
Hy currently remains on active duty and is now serving as the Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) at Naval Hospital Jacksonville in Florida. In witnessing the challenges that afflict our current healthcare systems, he aspires to remain a strong advocate for efficient and effective, modernized healthcare, and it is with that ambition that Hy has returned to his alma mater and is currently enrolled in the master’s degree program in Data Science at Notre Dame with the hopes of learning how to better leverage emerging technologies to ultimately improve healthcare delivery in the military and beyond.
