Participation FAQs
Who is the course for?
Service members and veterans preparing to apply for undergraduate study at Notre Dame, especially those interested in STEM, business, and architecture requiring strong math skills. It is particularly relevant to students who have been away from formal mathematics for several years.
What is the course?
The five-week online course begins with one week of orientation, followed by four weeks of mathematics instruction. Independent lessons and practice are paired with twice-weekly live, small-group sessions where participants can work through problems and ask questions.
What will I study?
Algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus fundamentals; interactive problem-solving; practice assignments; and assessments that help students demonstrate what they have learned.
Faculty and Course Development
Developed collaboratively by OMVA, the Department of Mathematics, and the Office of Digital Learning. Professor Brian Mulholland, Director of ASCEND in the Department of Mathematics, led the inaugural course.
How does it help?
OMVA orientation and checkpoint content help participants develop study habits, manage their time, seek support, and translate the discipline and experience of military service into academic life.
Successful completers receive an Academic Performance Letter from Notre Dame mathematics faculty documenting their course performance and demonstrated readiness for college mathematics.
Who pays for it?
Participation is fully funded by OMVA, with no charge to participating students.
What is expected of participants?
Participants are expected to engage in orientation, scheduled live instruction, and independent coursework, and complete the required assignments and assessments. The course combines faculty guidance with consistent individual practice.
How much time should I plan to commit?
Live sessions are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:00–9:30 p.m. Eastern. In addition to those sessions, participants should set aside time for independent lessons, practice, assignments, and assessments throughout the course.
Can I participate while working or fulfilling military responsibilities?
The online format and recorded sessions support participants balancing coursework with work and military responsibilities. However, recordings do not eliminate participation or completion requirements. Please discuss anticipated scheduling conflicts with OMVA before enrolling so we can help determine whether the course is a good fit.
What will I receive upon successful completion?
Successful completers receive an Academic Performance Letter from Notre Dame mathematics faculty documenting their course performance and demonstrated readiness for college mathematics. The course does not award academic credit, and completion does not guarantee admission to Notre Dame.
