Army ROTC Experiential Education Program

The Army ROTC Experiential Education Program provides transformative learning opportunities to deepen students' understanding of military history, leadership, and the enduring values of service and resilience. This year, we are excited to highlight the remarkable success of our inaugural trip to New York, made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Notre Dame Army ROTC program, West Point, and the Notre Dame International Security Center.

Essential History Expeditions tour guide, Brian Detoy, speaks to cadets on a staff ride about the American Revolution.

Experiencing History & Building Connections

During the 2024 experiential trip, Notre Dame Army ROTC cadets explored pivotal moments in American history while fostering camaraderie with their counterparts from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Highlights of the trip included:

  • A shared meal in historic Washington Hall, where camaraderie and respect for one another transcended the Notre Dame-Army football rivalry.
  • Visits to significant Revolutionary War sites, such as Forts Clinton and Montgomery, West Point Cemetery, and Fort Lee, offering powerful lessons on resilience, military strategy, and the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom.
  • Time for reflection at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, where the cadets heard impactful stories of courage and dedication from first responders.
  • A lecture and panel focused on civil-military relations and leadership, featuring esteemed speakers and scholars, including Retired General Joseph Votel and Professor Michael Desch.

These experiences offered cadets a dynamic blend of historical immersion, ethical leadership lessons, and opportunities to engage with impactful personal stories of service and sacrifice.
